Process Insights: A Designer’s Leachate Treatment Plant Design Secrets – New Ebook!

I’ve just released a brand-new PDF ebook: “Process Insights: A Designer’s Leachate Treatment Plant Design Secrets”

If you’re a consultant, water process engineer, or anyone who wants to confidently design real, regulator-ready landfill leachate treatment plants, this guide will fast-track your skills.

For just $17, you’ll get the exact roadmap I used over 30+ years to design more than 20 successful leachate treatment plants in the UK, Ireland, South Africa, Malaysia and beyond.

The result of a Career Built on Landfills, Leachate, and Solving Difficult Problems

I started my journey in 1971 at the University College of Swansea, studying Civil Engineering and Environmental Studies—with deep training in biochemistry, microbiology, and water chemistry. That foundation shaped my entire professional life.

Over 35+ years, I became:

  • A Chartered Civil Engineer

  • A Chartered Environmentalist

  • A Member of the ICE and CIWM

  • And eventually, a specialist known internationally for landfill leachate treatment plant design.

My career took me from the UK to Ireland, South Africa, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Cyprus, Vietnam, Latvia, India—and back again—working as a Leachate Treatment Specialist, Project Manager, and Design Lead on dozens of major landfill projects.

For more than 30 years, leachate treatment has been central to my life’s work.

Designing 20+ Full-Scale Leachate Treatment Plants Worldwide

I have been privileged to design or co-design over 20 full-scale Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) aerobic leachate treatment plants, including:

  • Arpley LTP (up to 400 m³/day)

  • Deep Moor, Skibeden, and Bryn Pica LTPs

  • Multiple WRG/FCC sites in Yorkshire & Derbyshire

  • Several South African plants (Marionnhill, Buffelsdraai, Vissershok)

  • Greengairs LTP for Shanks

  • LTPs for Viridor, Biffa, Amgen Cymru, and more

Many of these facilities included leachate treatability pilot trials, and nearly all required innovative thinking to meet strict consent limits using practical, operable technologies.

I worked extensively with SBR systems, extended aeration, reed bed polishing, and reverse osmosis—selecting the right process for each site’s quality, climate, and discharge requirements.

From Design to Teaching: Sharing Leachate Knowledge

For more than a decade (1999–2009), I also delivered the CIWM Annual Leachate Training Course, teaching:

  • Leachate characterisation

  • How leachate evolves over time

  • Groundwater pollution risks

  • Biological and physical treatment processes

  • Practical pilot trial methods

  • On-site leachate laboratory interpretation

This teaching work always reminded me how little specialised leachate knowledge is available to new engineers—even those already proficient in wastewater treatment.

Why I Wrote This Ebook

Now retired, after a rewarding career with Enviros/Aspinwall, SKM, and later running IPPTS Associates as a sole-trader consultant, I felt it was time to give back.

Leachate treatment is a niche discipline, and too often, younger engineers struggle due to the lack of accessible, practical guidance. Most textbooks barely touch the reality of designing for mixed MSW landfills, variable ammonia loads, seasonal flow cycles, and unpredictable chemistry.

This ebook is my attempt to change that.

Inside “Process Insights: A Designer’s Leachate Treatment Plant Design Secrets,” I share:

  • The exact design reasoning I used on real projects

  • My step-by-step pilot trial methodology

  • How to predict leachate flow and quality

  • How to turn pilot data into a full SBR design

  • The practical shortcuts and engineering judgements only acquired through decades of field experience

For a water process engineer who already understands biological treatment, this knowledge can be worth many thousands in project income. It certainly was for me.

But today, my goal isn’t to profit.
My goal is to help the next generation build better, cleaner, more reliable leachate treatment plants—and avoid the pitfalls that I’ve already lived through.
